You want to visit Niagara Falls, but there are two destinations: The New York side or the Ontario side of the border. While Canada offers a much more robust tourism experience, many would refer to as a “tourism trap,”  New York’s attractions have their charm, and nearby North Tonawanda, Lockport, and Buffalo add a lot more things to do. This guide breaks down some of the most enticing attractions on both sides of the border to help you finalize your plans.

Battle Ground Hotel Museum on Lundy's Lane, Niagara Falls, ON

Battle Ground Hotel Museum

The Battle Ground Hotel Museum, steeped in the historic fabric of the Lundy’s Lane Battlefield, offers a glimpse into 19th-century tavern life and the early tourism that grew around this famous site of conflict. Once the residence of Ruth Redmond, a retired school teacher dedicated to preserving local heritage, the building now showcases furnished rooms from the 1850s and artifacts from the War of 1812. Through its exhibits and presentations, the museum illustrates the intersection of commemoration and tourism, highlighted by a period when an observation tower on the property enhanced visitors’ experience of the battlefield.

Within the walls of this restored tavern, the museum also delves into the social customs of the era, as evidenced by the Lady’s Parlour—a room signifying the genteel side of society, where women and children would gather, away from the vices of alcohol and tobacco. The decor and items like an ornate tea set not only reflect the feminine aspect of the period but also signal the wealth and social standing of its owners. This museum captures the essence of a time when Niagara Falls was burgeoning as a tourist destination, and Lundy’s Lane was at the heart of Canadian history. Niagara Falls Canada
