A few years ago we followed that route up the amphitheater that you mentioned to the right side. We followed a rough path on the rim, and could certainly hear the creek, and could somewhat make out a significant looking falls down in the gorge. We really couldn't decipher a reasonable way to get back into the gorge, though. I've seen pictures on Instagram of people in the upper gorge, so I know it's possible. It just might be beyond my capabilities, and beyond my danger comfort level.
