Whitaker Park

Whitaker Park is located in Lewis County in the town of Martinsburg. The sign stated closed but the gate was open, the water falls is located near the end of the park in the old section. You can park at one of the picnic areas just before the end loop. There is a trail to the creek, avoid the old viewing platform it’s not safe. To access the falls you have to walk the creek the stones are very slippery so be sure of each footing before proceeding. I couldn’t get to the second falls due to the wet slimy rocks. At the end of the park is a trail that might get you to the bottom but it’s on posted land thus I didn’t attempt it. In lower water levels you could reach the bottom falls via of the creek. Whetstone Gulf is less than 5 miles from Whitaker it also has a waterfall but the bridge is removed thus wading is necessary. Whetsone Gulf

Hadn't planned on stopping here but it caught my eye on the GPS while returning home from the ADKs. In high water the only way down is via a very steep herd path with roots to hold on to. Met some kayakers who had run the Moose river earlier and were scouting out these falls. Like myself I think they were expecting shorter drops. The 2 main drops were in the 30-40' range with the lower fall being a vertical plunge. The upper part of this stream also has a lot of falls where it exits The Tug Hill Plateau. Didn't check out the land status but I had seen on the web that kayakers have run it and given the falls some interesting names:

Thanks! This was just yesterday - the mud was bad as always but I've just gotten used to having wet feet in the ADK's. I used to circumvent the mud pits but its inevitable that you'll get into one so I just more or less go straight through now. I don't think I saw a single insect but it was raining all day so that's probably not a fair assessment.

Also just to add - there is a 3rd fall just downstream from these two and from the aerial it looks like it may be the tallest. I'm pretty sure getting there would require passing on to the posted property though.

Your correct on the third falls If you head to the back of the park and follow the trails to the creek you'll see many posted signs. You can hear the third falls, if I recall their was an old viewing platform in the back corner of the park, it's a shame it wasn't maintained.

Yes if you go on the posted property. There is a rope that goes down to the creek. I’ve never been there because it seems dangerous. But I’ve seen people down there when I was there the first time.
