I think it would be great to have an annual picnic at a park, so we can all meet and talk, maybe organize a hike or rafting adventure. It would be a casual thing, starting out small and hopefully getting larger each year as we gain new members.

This is what I'm thinking would be great to start out with our first one.

Chittenango Falls State Park?
I think they have pavilions there - I don't know if I can reserve one or if they are first come-first-serve.

Hots and Hamburgers / Buns Condiments would be provided by me. Of course it wouldn’t be upstate NY if I didn’t supply the white-hots!
Veggie burgers and dogs would also be available.

People would be asked to bring a dish to pass.

It would be cool to have a few bottles of wine from the area people can sample too.
Not sure on the dates, just let me know what’s best for people… definitely a weekend afternoon.

I’m thinking spouses/kids welcome.

As far as activities: Hiking (though not much in that park right?), Photography tips by our resident photo experts any other ideas welcome.

Let me know what you think, ideas, etc…

Sounds like fun. I'd vote for a park a bit farther west than Chittenango although I wouldn't be completely opposed to a picnic there. It looks like the best Saturdays this summer would be 7/14, 7/28, 8/4, 8/11 or 8/25.

Letchworth and Stony Brook are possibilities.

My wife would definitely vote for Stony Brook. That's one of her favorite places. Watkins Glen is another possibility.

i can say that picking a saturday, unfortunately, is going to make photos very difficult with all the people around

but you don't have many more options

yeah that's true. I work Monday - Friday so it would have to be a Saturday or Sunday picnic if we were to go.

if we had cool enough jobs, we could take off the day ahead of time and get a less populated day anywhere

Yeah. I practically have to offer an animal sacrifice to get any time off from my job.
