You don't need a fancy camera. A macro or super macro setting on a compact will do just fine! That's what I used for this one.
The science of what makes the flakes a certain shape is fascinating, as is this book. We had it for the kids when they were younger and I've been meaning to dig through the basement to find it. It's probably just easier to buy a new one.
If you look closely, you can see a teeny tiny snowflake to the right of the larger one!
