Fishing in New York State - Regulations

Generally speaking, for upstate New York, all forms of Trout, and Landlocked Salmon has an open season from April 1 - October 15 in many of the streams and smaller rivers in the state.
Black Bass - including large and Smallmouth bass have an open season from the 3rd Saturday in June - November 30th
Pike, Tiger Muskies, and Walleye's have an open season from the 1st Saturday in May through March 15th
Perch, Sunfish and Bluegill (panfish) can be fished for ALL YEAR
The Pacific Salmon and lake-run Atlantic Salmon fall under different regulations that can be found under the Great Lake and Tributaries Special Regulations:

It is very important to read the special section on the Great Lakes and their tributaries, as the regulations are quite specific to the waterway and creel limits are usually much lower than fishing the rest of the year (for example, 1 steelhead, 2 salmon from the Salmon River in Pulaski).
Fishing for the Pacific Salmon in Lake Ontario is different than fishing in the tributaries. Also, during specific times of the year, the Salmon River has special lure regulations where you may only use a single-barbed hook on certain lures when fishing for Salmon or Trout.

For the most part - the special Finger Lakes regulations allow you to fish for salmonid species year round (Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Landlocked Salmon). Also, the direct tributaries to the Finger Lakes (such as Catherine Creek on Seneca Lake, Fall Creek on Cayuga Lake, Bear Swamp Creek on Skaneateles Creek, etc) have longer seasons for trout that go until around December 31st.
Generally speaking, the creel limits for trout (Rainbow, Brown, Brook) is 5 fish kept. Lake Trout and Landlocked Salmon is 3. Bass and Walley are usually 5, but often can be 3 as well.
