Ithaca Farmers Market cutting plastic bags
Use of compostable, paper alternatives planned

The Ithaca Farmers Market is making moves toward sustainability, with one of its main goals to eliminate the use of plastic bags by 2013.

"It's a three-year plan," said Robin Ostfeld, co-owner of Blue Heron Farm and chairwoman of the market board's Sustainability Committee. "It's very gradual. We wanted to make the transition easier for vendors and customers."

Starting at the June 4, market vendors will offer compostable Bio-Bags or paper bags. Some vendors already offer reused plastic bags, which will still be allowed for now. In 2012, there will be Bio-Bag dispensers and reusable cloth bags available. By 2013, the market will completely eliminate single-use plastic bags.

I wonder how this compares to the Rochester one.

The Ithaca Farmer's Market is like a postcard picture of how one should be. It is all local arts and crafts peppered in with artisan foods from around the world, and it sits right on the tip of the water. Park at the Piggery (bacon based coffee shop/deli that is also a charcuterie.) The lady who runs it is nice, but her husband gets pouty if you talk to her for too long. If you don't mind waiting in line, the baguettes from the bread place are great.

I wondered too. So I visited. I wish I lived closer to Ithaca. Their market is truly locovore driven and a feast for the senses.

There are lots of things I like about our market here in Rochester (people watching, food, running into people I know.....) but for quality, consistency, atmosphere, and a total class act - Ithaca gets my vote. I will return.
