I gather these photographers are pretty famous...I did check out a couple of their web pages...some amazing work.
I was hoping that they would have an exhibit of photos at the market...but it was just a portrait shoot for a project called House of Pictures...
so...decided...why not participate while I was there...and have a world famous photographer take my portrait.
...worth the cheap thrill to stand in the rain... :)

Stopped by the exhibition late yesterday and spotted your picture right away, Mikell. Enjoyed seeing the photographs they took all over the city. An incredible amount of emotion in them. For me, it reinforced my awareness of the disconnect we have here between the city and the suburbs. :(

I wish it was staying around longer, because I'd like to go back and see it again. It runs through today at 5 o'clock if anyone wants to check it out. Prince Street in the city. Visual studies workshop.

Kelly...thanks so much for posting that. I didn't realize it was ending tonight...so we stopped by there late this afternoon and saw the exhibit...it's amazing!
One of the students organizing it told me that many people don't like the photographs...some of the comments are that it portrays the city as very sombre and dark and depressing.
I thought there was a lot of normal humanity...and like you said...emotion. I loved the photos.
It's not a marketing show to attract tourists...it's REAL ...it's the people of a city and the everyday things that are part of every place. ...very powerful images.

The biggest bonus for me was finding a few other portraits of myself that Jim Goldberg took last week at the market. I picked up one on Saturday...but I didn't like it much...and didn't know he took several others. There was a pile on the desk by the door and someone told me to look through them...that there were photos of me in there...so I did. I absolutely love one of them...posted it on my Facebook page today and it will be my profile pic for awhile. That was worth the trip to see the exhibit all by itself...and I have YOU to thank. :)

You're welcome, pretty lady!

I'm so glad to hear that you made it to see the exhibit, Mikell. And glad my little tip helped you make it before it all vanished. Amazing, yes? Did you happen to make it to the mens' room downstairs to see the WWI and WWll sub-exhibit?

It's hard for me to hear that people don't like it because it portrays what's real. I did read some of the comments on the brown paper and was kind of surprised.....but is that where you got your info?

I really hope Michael Tomb got to see this. His criticism of Capture Rochester was always that there was no reality with regard to the "real" city. This is the real deal. Incredible images!

Thanks for letting me know I helped! :D

A side note: I can't help but marvel at the appropriateness of the Magnum folks to choose the Public Market for their big media splash.....if any institution in the area does a fantastic job of uniting suburbia with inner city, it's the Market.

I didn't actually read the comments on the paper...but spent some time talking to one of the student organizers there who told me what had been written...so, yes...it was from the comments people wrote down...it surprised me...since I loved it so much. I hope Michael saw it too...or has a chance at some point.
I didn't see the other exhibits downstairs....sometime, I must go back and check the place out more. I agree...wish it was up for longer...more people need to see it....maybe Eastman House will run the show again sometime.:)

Quite the project. And I agree! More people need to see it! Too many of us live in a self-absorbed world with our heads up our asses.

Where else can you see a guy in a suit and a guy in pajamas within a foot of each other? Both buying a quart of local, fresh strawberries....
