Asylums are beautiful places, some in a haunting kind of way. They are often difficult to access, and risky, and the hobby (known as urban exploration) is basically illegal lol. I've been a bunch of places, but I'm not like most explorers and I don't make it my main #1 hobby. I split time equally between 4 different things I love to do. There are several locations I have not posted any pictures of publicly, just to protect the location if it's one that's in pristine condition. Here are some I've been to:
Pennhurst (Pennsylvania) was a state school and hospital for the retarded and insane. The places was overcrowded and underfunded, leading to horrible patient conditions. It was shut down in 1987. The video on
http://www.elpeecho.com/pennhurst/video.htm shows an investigative report from the 1960's called Suffer the Little Children and what things were like for patients:

Greystone, was a Kirkbride style mental hospital for the insane in New Jersey, closed in 2007 I think:

Medfield, don't know much about this ones history (Massachusetts):

Forest Haven, was the "Pennhurst" of Maryland specifically for black kids:

And finally just one from other assorted places from around the northeast:
