Fishing Newbie

Postby Matt » Wed Jan 30, 2008 3:23 pm

I have decided I'm going to fish this summer. I haven't been fishing since I was a little kid.
What do I need to buy/have/do?

Personally, I would recommend buying a decent all-in-one at Wal-Mart (I have a Shakespeare rod & reel combo), along with a small equipped tackle box to start. That way, if you decide that you're not really into it after all you haven't made a huge investment. The one piece of equipment that might not be included in a ready-made tackle box, but is absolutely essential is a pair of needle nose pliers.

If you like a fish that puts up some fight and a good fishing spot .. All you need is canned corn and strong test line. There is a nice place called May's Point in the Monazuma Area ... Nice place to fish .. Ray and I try to get out there any chance we get, and they even Rent Boats and there is a campground near by.

:lol: I'll definitely defer to Champy on that one! It's a little too hands-on for me (not to mention my basic aversion to bottom-feeders). Did you happen to catch Mike Rowe's lesson in noodlin' on Dirty Jobs?

The same guy who taught Mike Rowe recently had his photo in Field & Stream. I did a search there and came up with a series of photos of him. I started in the middle of the series (because of the impressive photo), but just click above the photo to browse: http://www.fieldandstream.com/fieldstream/photogallery/article/0,13355,1669280_5,00.html Be sure to check out his tattoo.

Two of my really good friends are NYS registered fishing guides:
* Carl Coleman http://colemansflyshop.com
* Jay Peck http://jaypeckguides.com

This time of year they fish mostly in Spring Brook or Oatka Creek for smaller (10-12") Brown and Brook trout, but in the fall they guide at the Salmon River (Altmar/Pulaski), Oak Orchard River (Waterport) and Sandy Creek (Hamlin) for monster Salmon, Brown Trout and Steelhead.

Give Jay or Carl a call. They'll get you into the fish and take care of everything for you, including gear (waders, rods, flies). Not sure what they charge, but I'm sure it's reasonable. Tell them I sent you.

We've gotta get Matt out there. The Salmon and Big Browns start running soon!
