Located in Mahanoy City, the home of the Mollie Maguires this abandoned coal breaker is the LARGEST in the country. And 90% of it, is still there. I am itching to return to this beast soon! 10 stories tall, steel and concrete. Ill let the photos tell the story.

Everywhere on the bottom level of this beast are pools of mercury...seriously everywhere. All the time we where there I could not for the life of me figure out why there was so much of it. Then it dawned on me. When they left this place, the left it all. Hats, boots, coats, machinery, and......all of the light bulbs. Mercury vapor bulbs. Vandals have been smashing them all over the site. The mercury runs down and ends up.....on the ground..and consequently in the ground water.

Nope, no particulate in the air. At least nothing toxic. Mercury on the ground floor was the only real danger and we all wear heavy boots. I generally wear military grade pants that tie around my boot tops, looks goofy, keeps nasties out of my sox and shoes. There are some places, that we have had to wear masks in though.. air so thick you can barely breathe. Those stories are coming up.. Thanks folks...plenty more coming. This is quickly becoming my lifes work.
