Pretty neat tree. I wonder how old it is. The closer picture does look more like a willow. Normally the bark and the leaves are good identifiers.

If you go back, Marty - do get a close picture of the leaves. I still think your first impression is possible. A very old willow will get those gnarly galls on the bark. And when topped, as this one has been - will readily send up more shoots just like we see here. There's just not enough detail available in your image. Nice little mystery...
