Actually, "Adirondack" means Bark Eater. It is an Anglicized version of the Mohawk latilontaks (ratirontaks) 'they eat bark', a derogatory name which the Mohawk historically applied to neighboring Algonquian-speaking tribes. When food was scarce, the Algonquians would eat the inside of the bark of the white pine

This time of year some Vermont restraurants serve fiddleheads and ramps. Maybe in the 'daks too.
