WHO: Brandon Stanton, creator of the photo blog Humans of New York, will speak at the University of Rochester.

TIME, DATE, PLACE: 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, in Strong Auditorium, located on the University of Rochester River Campus. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

WHAT: After being fired from his job as a bond trader in Chicago, Brandon Stanton moved to New York City with an idea to create a photographic census of the city. The blog, started in 2010, features street portraits of people in New York City, along with snippets of conversations, and today has nearly one million collective followers on Facebook and Tumblr. In October 2013, Stanton's first book, Humans of New York, was released, soon becoming a #1 New York Times Bestseller.
"I thought it would be really cool to create an exhaustive catalogue of the city's inhabitants, so I set out to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and plot their photos on a map," Stanton explains on his blog. "I worked for several months with this goal in mind. But somewhere along the way, HONY began to take on a much different character. I started collecting quotes and short stories from the people I met, and began including these snippets alongside the photographs. Taken together, these portraits and captions became the subject of a vibrant blog, which over the past two years has gained a large daily following."
TICKETS: Tickets, which are $5 for undergraduates, $10 for members of the University community, and $15 for the general public, can also be purchased at the Common Market in Wilson Commons or online at http://www.urochestertickets.com, starting Monday, Feb. 17.
