Woman's body found near trail following fire
Police say death likely a homicide
By Raymond Drumsta • [email protected] • Staff Writer • June 4, 2009

ITHACA - The apparent homicide of a woman whose body was found on the Black Diamond Trail in the Town of Ithaca on Wednesday morning may be connected to a Tuesday night fire at an apartment in the 900 block of Taughannock Boulevard, according to an official.

The apartment is about 200 yards north of the location where the body was discovered by a biker and jogger after 8 a.m. Wednesday. About nine hours earlier, State Park Police conducting an investigation learned of the apartment fire and alerted Ithaca firefighters, who doused the blaze, fire officials said.

Ithaca Fire Department investigators were later called to the fire scene to assist park police with the investigation, fire officials said. Tompkins County sheriff's deputies, state police and Bangs Ambulance personnel also assisted, and the cause of the fire remained undetermined, they added.

Emergency officials later said that police were called to the scene of the fire to search for a missing person.

Calling the woman's death an apparent homicide, New York State Police took charge of the investigation shortly after the body was discovered Wednesday morning and began roping off areas near the trail where the body was found and at the apartment building. Though they did not release the woman's name, they described her as a white female, about 30 years old.

Sheriff's deputies, state police and Bangs Ambulance removed the body from the scene about 11:30 a.m. State police forensic investigators, Ithaca police, park police and deputies remained at the scene of the fire and the area where the body was found, and controlled access to both places.

The Black Diamond Trail begins in Cass Park in the City of Ithaca and runs north into the Town of Ithaca, where it parallels Taughannock Boulevard. The trail is visible from the apartment where the fire occurred Tuesday.

Investigators were seen canvassing the trail from where the body was found to a spot directly across from the apartment. Investigators were also searching in a narrow wooded strip that separates the trail from Taughannock Boulevard and the apartment.

The jogger, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she was running north on the trail and found the woman's body about a mile from the Children's Garden in Cass Park at about 8:15 a.m. She said the dead woman was lying face up on the trail, dressed in what appeared to be a white T-shirt and black running pants. The woman's shirt, she added, was blood-stained.

"I freaked out and ran back," she said. She then drove to the Ithaca Police station to report the body and found that a man who was biking on the trail had reported it as well. Though distraught by their discovery, they both gave statements to police, she added.

Shortly before the fire was reported, state park police were involved in a high-speed chase with a man who later had an accident on Halseyville Road near Perry City Road, Trumansburg fire and police officials said. Police, fire and ambulance personnel responded to the accident scene at about 10:30 p.m., and the man was airlifted from the crash site to Robert Packer Hospital. Though they were not allowed to disclose the nature of the man's injuries, fire officials said the fast actions of the police agencies probably saved the man's life. Police and fire officials could not confirm if the crash was connected with the other incidents.

State police promised to release additional details about the homicide investigation at a press conference today.

Police say husband is a suspect in Ithaca homicide
Kot led police on chase, stabbed himself
By Raymond Drumsta • [email protected] • Staff Writer • June 5, 2009

UPDATED at 7:50 a.m.: Blazej J. Kot has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Cornell researcher Caroline M. Coffey, Tompkins County District Attorney Gwen Wilkinson announced this morning.

Wilkinson said she decided to charge Kot Thursday evening. Kot is hospitalized and under guard in Pennsylvania, so a judge from there arraigned him in his hospital bed last night, she added.

Kot lacerated Coffey in the throat, which caused her to bleed to death, law-enforcement officials allege. A jogger and a biker found Coffey's body on a trail in the town of Ithaca Wednesday morning.
The night before, Kot crashed into some trees after he led police on a chase through the town of Ulysses.

Officers at the crash scene found Kot clutching an edged weapon, which they forced from his hand, law-enforcement officials said. He also had a life-threatening self-inflicted wound, and was taken to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, they added.

Wilkinson said she did not know if Kot's attorney was present in his room when he was arraigned, but said the fact that he's in Pennsylvania may raise extradition issues.

"He has the right to have an extradition hearing," she said. "But we are prepared to go forward with this case."
