This summer I am planning to stay at watkins glen state park. I'm from Canada and have never been in this area (closest I have been is letchworth) I need help with recommendations on a good loop and site # to stay at. I will be camping with a two-man tent and I do not need electricity. I am worried I will pick a site that is bad and I won't be able to put the tent stakes in the ground? I try to call watkins glen state park and asked them for any help all she told me is that oneida village is uneven ground and small. Is the ground rocky, dirt, sandy? Any description of what the sites are like. Looking at the beautiful photos it looks like a great photograph opportunity. Hoping to book a site soon before they fill up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

It's been a long time since I've been in the camping part of the park. Looking at the park map http://www.nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/M ... arkMap.pdf Thscarora is more open and thus free of stone and tree roots. Watkins Glen is nice for pictures, the hard part is getting the shot with no people.

I've never camped up there--too many people for my tastes, but that's just me. I would think that the soil would be fairly hard packed and rocky, but not so much that getting tent pegs in would be impossible. Sorry I can't be of more help.
