Finger Lakes Wineries Break Stereotype; Listed in Top 100

Video
Finger Lakes, N.Y.) - [e]Wine Spectator Magazine gave high ratings to red wines from the Finger Lakes[/e] just this month, even though white wine typically earns the biggest praise.

When Fox Run Winery owner Scott Osborn moved from California to the Finger Lakes, he remembers stereotypes regarding Finger Lakes wines, to wit, “you know, you'll never make a red wine again.'"

Today, Fox Run not only makes red wines to go with world-class whites like Riesling, but, Osborn said, "I do know now that there are just some tremendous red wines being made up here."

Those wines, in fact, earned[e]Fox Run[/e]a spot in the World's Top 100 Wineries according to Wine and Spirits Magazine. Fox Run will be honored along with the other 99 top wineries selected by Wine and Spirits Magazine at an event in San Francisco next month.

Winemakers like Peter Bell and Tricia Renshaw hope the award leads to easier out-of-state shipping. Right now, Finger Lakes wineries don't ship very much wine because of prohibitive regulations and too little publicity.

"If more people are aware of the wines that are here, and the quality of the wines, they might start requesting that the wines come out," Renshaw said.

More shipping and a better reputation could spur more growth and more jobs—as in--more people to pick the grapes, bottle the wine and pour it for customers.

Upstate New York will never be like California. Consider that in California, mid-size wineries make a quarter million cases a year. In the Finger Lakes, mid-size wineries make 20,000 cases.

Maybe, putting a limit on growth is a good thing for wine lovers.

"There are places in the world that are famous for their wine, but they have a Disneyland feel to them.--the roads are packed with SUVs and you can't get anywhere. I don't want that to happen in the Finger Lakes,” said Peter Bell. “Look at this beauty here."
