April Photo Challenge: Rule of Thirds

Postby Matt » Fri Apr 01, 2011 12:05 am

The purpose of these challenges is to encourage us to get out and get the best shot of an assigned subject. It's a great way to enhance your photography skills.
Even if you think you take crappy pictures, please join in. Those of you just reading the forum and not posting, this is your chance to join in and show off.

This month's challenge: "Rule of Thirds"

Image

How does this fall in to the rule with the frame divided into thirds?

The rule of thirds is a guideline for more dynamic composition. I don't feel it is the only way people should compose images, but it certainly can add feeling to an otherwise dull photo. There are several variations to the rule, but in general, divide the frame into thirds and line up a subject.
Here is a basic guide to the Rule of Thirds

Only rules:
It has to be taken by you.
It has to be taken in Upstate NY.

A winner will be selected based on the following criteria:
-freshness (have we seen it somewhere before or did you take it just for this challenge? - we prefer the latter!)
-frame
-subject
-creativity
-use of color (or lack thereof)
-uniqueness

The March prize:
100 Tillion Dollars!!!!!*

Its a great rule that can really give a photo that little extra something. If I can't make it work in the original composition I certainly use it when cropping.

Love the owl shot! Could you share what type of lens you are using? I only have a 15-55mm kit lens and I've been planning to pick up an older zoom lens from ebay. Just curious to see if these type of wildlife shots are attainable with 200mm or if 300mm is typically needed. Thanks.

I think my 50-200 did an alright job on the owl prowl...but for wildlife...theres probably never enough reach.

I am actually not sure at this time which lens that I used for this shot. Stuck here at work all night, so I will have to look at the original when I get home.

I do know that I had three lenses with me at the time of this photo.
ZUIKO 14-45mm F3.5-5.6
Sigma 55mm-200mm f/4-5.6 DC
Sigma 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG APO Aspherical

Usually my Sigma 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 is on the camera when I go into the woods, and generally with that lens I am shooting around 300mm, seems to be the sweet spot.
