More of her stuff - here.

And a short film here.

And a film about the archiving process here.

Maybe one of these days the movie will be released. I will be first in line.

To have the privilege of viewing these brilliant photographs which were so close to never being seen by anyone - even by herself, is a gift. Yes, an overwhelming gift. I am in awe of her work and her story.

“Finding Vivian Maier” documentary to premiere at Toronto International Film Festival

Image
It's seems almost as long of a road for the documentary "Finding Vivian Maier" to get its world premiere as it's been for its mysterious street photographer subject to find world recognition. The movie, which began as Kickstarter project in 2010, traces the life of Maier, a virtually unknown photographer whose stirring, black-and-white work was discovered in a storage locker only a few years before her death.

The documentary's filmmakers, John Maloof (who purchased Maier's negatives at a storage locker auction in 2007) and Charlie Siskel, released a trailer for "Finding Vivian Maier" (see below) back in February and today announced the movie will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. While a specific date has not been set yet for the premiere, the film is expected to be shown between September 5th and 15th. Check out the film's Facebook page for updates.

The movie has been released. No idea if it will be shown anywhere near us. (If anyone has information, please post! Thanks.)

The few reviews I could scrounge up were positive.
Ultimately, Finding Vivian Maier chronicles a rather sad tale. Maier died penniless, descending into what appears to have been ever deepening mental illness. However, there is the work and the work is undeniable. Vivian Maier lived life on her own terms, with a level of independence that was rare for women of her time. She forfeited a lot in her own life to produce the work and the work speaks for itself. Finding Vivian Maier is an absolute must see...

Indie films hitting rochester all depends on how well they do in NYC, and it's not even showing there.
But I think it would hit iTunes sooner rather than later.

I have the BBC documentary, which is an hour and ten minutes. Haven't seen it yet. It's one or the other for me.

I'm mesmerized by her, not only because of her incredible photography, but because of her eccentricity, lifestyle, extreme introversion and her ability to keep the whole of her passion a complete secret.

I hadn't realized until today that she also dabbled in videography.

I hope they release more of these.

And - here's the awkward but interesting discussion after the movie about her premiered last month in the US in NYC . . .
