The Paw Paw Tunnel is about 3,000 feet long and was cut through the rock so canal boats could avoid an otherwise six mile route around the mountain. The east end features a waterfall that, I'm told, is seasonal. In summer it will reduce to a mere trickle or stop entirely.

Fortunately the water was flowing when I traveled through the area!

That's pretty cool! Is it on the Erie Canal, and where?
“There’s an inconsequentiality to our lives that living in the wilderness shows up. Mountain are real, they set their limits, they set ours. They expose us, make us vulnerable and strong at the same time. “

These falls and the tunnel are found in the C&O Canal National Historic Park, in Maryland (39.55930 -78.461872) . The tunnel and falls are named after the town of Paw Paw, across the river in WV.

I added another view of the falls, taken from the wooden walkway perched on the canal bank across from the falls.

Very cool. I like how the rock layers turn up. A lot of uplift in the strata in that region.
