Great Falls National Park, VA....Potomac river runs the border between Maryland and Virginia. Stopped for a brief moment visiting my brother in Alexandria. It was a very, very cold day and the wind was gusting. Didn't stick around to read any of the plaques or Great Falls facts, maybe next time I'm out there.

Those rock formations in the river are impressive.

I recently visited the Great Falls on the Potomac from the Maryland side. A wooden boardwalk crosses Olmstead Island, which makes the Falls much more accessible and protects the island habitat. The boardwalk crosses several places where water runs when the Potomac is high. The following two pictures were taken at the first bridge.

At the second bridge no water flowed, but one could see where it had recently from the pools formed amongst the rocks. At the third bridge this was the upstream view:

And who would have guessed! There's a downstream view as well! ;)
