Hudson River State Hospital

Postby daimonpaul » Fri Nov 26, 2010 9:38 pm

Hudson was a former mental institution following the Kirkbride plan in Poughkeepsie, Ny. It was closed completely in 2003 and has sat abandoned overlooking the Hudson River since. It can be seen driving up Rt 9 through Poughkeepsie.

What an awesome place to shoot. Thanks for sharing.
To become truly immortal, a work of art must escape all human limits: logic and common sense will only interfere. But once these barriers are broken, it will enter the realms of childhood visions and dreams.

Sad, eerie and beautiful all at the same time! Wonderful of you to share these!

Wow....all that decay in "7 years", although I'm sure it had started long before it was closed for good....what a shame...the exterior of the building is exquisite...could have been beautiful had it been renovated early on..... Thanks for sharing...appears this shoot was not without a degree of risk...

The Admin was closed in 2003. The wards (the ones with all the holes in the floors) had been progressively closed years before that. There have also been several fires including one in 2007 that wiped out the interior of a whole section of the mens wards.

Also yes it was pretty risky, the floors in the wards were spongy between all the holes :D

Awesome photos! Yikes...I'd be too scared to venture off the first floor

Thanks for sharing! Definitely want to check this out sometime.

My parents took my brothers and I to a similar mansion, turned hotel, turned hospital in the hills of Dansville, NY years ago. I love exploring abandoned places like this but just can't find them very easily.

What a fantastic series. A look at yesterday that is not completely distant. Railings do not start peeling like wall paint. So it works. Beauty and the Beast
