I think I'm turning into a Flickr addict!

Postby npeeff » Fri Feb 15, 2008 4:10 pm

Ever since I joined Flickr and learned how to use it to get comments, I've turned into an addict! Using those post 1 award 5 groups, I think I have about 18 photos that have at least 20 comments or more. This gives you a good idea for what the general public thinks of your photos so you know what might sell at a local art show. You're also exposed to all the wonderful images of thousands of talented photographers all over the world. It's nice to know if someone from France, Italy, Japan, Brazil, England, Poland, etc. enjoys your photos! I've also noticed an increase in traffic at my website since I've joined.

I've noticed you on there quite a bit and I see all the great responses you are getting.
It is a great feeling to have the comments and favorites pile up. I haven't had anything on Explorer yet (Champy is the "champ" of that one).

Flickr has angered me recently. I've given up on the Rate-My-Photo groups. I always submit my best work to those groups only to have a person with no talent whatsoever give me a dull rating. I always check out their profiles and thank the people that have work I admire... but then I get a 6/10 from a person that just desaturates/over-saturates/increases the contrast on their shitty photos and calls it art- and that just angers me that they don't even provide feedback as to why. Today I received a rating of 0/10 on and the guy gave the following feedback: "I hate Hamsters" - I deleted his comment.

I'm also tired of the same old "flickr cliche" images.
I'd like to put a collection of them together.
The "desaturated self portrait holding the camera over my eye, because I'm a pro" shot that adorn's everyone's avatar.
The "I spread out some crayola colored pencils on the table and it looks like a rainbow
The "Tree in front of sunset"
and others I can't recal right now. Let me know if you notice any.

I have found though that over saturating your image (beyond any realistic colors) will net you twice as many views and almost as many comments.

Lately I'm addicted to finding the best of the best and using them for inspiration.

I upgraded to pro on Flickr not too long ago and haven't done much with it recently. I really should get with it a little so I can actually see what it's all about. Don't think any of my photos have any comments on them. I peek around, but don't think I've used Flickr to its fullest.

I think once I get through this month and early next month I'll have a better grasp on some time to delve into things like this.

My regular blog: A 'lil HooHaa

Hey Matt:

Sorry to hear some jerk made that rude comment "I hate Hamsters." I enjoyed that picture.
Maybe we should post comments about which Flickr members you really think have outstanding talent and explain what you like about them. We could also comment on members that seem to get more credit than they deserve.

I was totally addicted to flickr about a year and a half ago - I've quieted down, but sometimes I still really try and get into Explore. One of my Eagle Cliff shots I uploaded recently made it in there. A few have been front page shots - Cool Blue:

Among a few others. The key to exposure seems to be a certain few groups that trigger the explore software mechanism. I've actually made some money from Flickr - about $400 to date from various sales. Plus a couple of nice $40 trout posters that a company used one of my pics for a promotional ad.

This guy has struck a pleasing balance of tone and color.

Flickr added videos. It's ticking a lot of members off. It feels so out of place- I feel it may cheapen the site and turn it into another Youtube wannabe.
