Yeah, I was wondering why you hadn't beaten me to the punch on this. :) I actually read about it in the Ithaca Journal this morning in an AP release, but then I checked the DEC site to get the word "straight from the horses mouth." The article in the Journal made reference to this being similar in some ways to Colony Collapse Disorder.

wasn't sure if this would be better in the hummingbirds or bats topic....but either way - quite a shot (not mine). I guess if they love fruit, why not sugar water?!

Often I'd find my hummingbird feeders practically drained in the morning. Never really knew why. I can't find anything in Matt's Bat Guide that says we have frugivores here in NY, but......

Guess it's not unusual for the fruit eaters to do this - and, because they cannot truly hover, they feed from them differently than hummingbirds. Apparently they can easily empty a feeder in one night. The addition of sound effects in the second one cracks me up!

Very cool, Kelly! I'm thinking that the first video (and the still photo) might be Australian Southern Blossom Bats. I wish that we had them here. I'd love to feed them too!

I squirrel can empty a feeder just by trying to get at it and knocking it around. Upstate NY has in increase in nocturnal squirrel activity because of the large amounts of open field lead to a boom in hawk predation, and less forests mean less owls, so squirrels are a bit safer at night.
We don't have any native nectar/pulp-feeding bats in NY state. There are migrant bats, but i doubt they migrate this far north.
