Goodness. I compared the photograph to the northern water snake I had living at my place and mine had more of a banding look than a pattern. Though mine was old...I could tell for how dull its marking were. The younger they are the more the pattern shows, same for if they're freshly shed. I knew its head in the image did not show a pit viper appearance, nor did the tail indicate a rattle, yet both these features were not real visible. I even enlarged the image before making a guesstimation. Water snakes are very aggressive. So this is one you do not want to tangle with. They bite repeatedly and have an anti-coagulant in their saliva that is tough to stop the bleeding from. Glad you kept your distance. Here is an image of the one I had here: http://www.lauriedirkx.com/Herps/Not-So ... 1504_j5PBP

Here's a closer image, just in case there's still any question. Thanks for everyone's help.

I am strong, because I've been weak.
I am fearless, because I've been afraid.
I am wise, because I've been foolish.
