High Falls Gorge

Postby L_G_D » Tue Aug 04, 2009 7:08 pm

High Falls Gorge is a commercial tourist attraction. After paying the entrance fee, you walk along paths & suspended walkways to view the gorge and the surrounding area. Because of this, there's usually a few people around and setting up a tripod in the middle of the pathway or bridge can get you some strange looks. So, these are hand held while I was there a few summers ago with some visiting relatives.

I like the rock patterns on this one... I could spend a lot of time working with the angular shapes it would present to the lens.

Yes, it's a nice place, and even though it's a bit "touristy", without the walkways it would be hard to find a place to take pictures from. There are also some great water-worn rock formations like deep potholes and such.

Stopped here while I was in the Lake Placid area over Thanksgiving weekend. It was covered in snow (and actively snowing), which made the walk pretty cold, but interesting. I'll try to post photos soon, but I'm really behind on photo processing.

Nice, I've never been there in the winter. Drove by a few times, but never stopped.

Howdy, folks! Clearly this is an older thread (duh!), but I'm quite intrigued by these photographs. Like L_G_D, I've been past it various times but never took the time to stop and "smell the roses," if you will. It really is beautiful! It's probably a lot more beautiful in person. Think it would be difficult to climb in the winter? Wait, what am I saying? Of course it would be -- but has anyone actually done it? =P

Peace, everyone. Thanks for letting me yap it up!
If I'm gonna do ANY winter sports, I'm going to need some snowboard pants!

Yes, welcome. When you say "climb" do you mean ice climbing up the falls? I wouldn't know, but since it is private property I would think it's closed in winter (don't really know) and I seriously doubt they let people out on the frozen river if only for insurance reasons.

Anyway, the Chapel Pond area is an ice climbing Mecca with all sorts of things to do.
